British Minecraft Builder and Content Creator

Charles Batchelor, known professionally as Grian, has established himself as one of the most influential Minecraft content creators on YouTube. Born on August 9, 1993, in London, England, he has built a substantial following through his building tutorials, collaborative multiplayer content, and innovative game series. As of October 2025, his main channel commands approximately 8.77 million subscribers and has accumulated over 2.69 billion total views across more than 814 videos.[1][3]

[1][2]

Early Career and CraftedMovie

Before launching his solo career, Grian was part of CraftedMovie, a Minecraft cinema channel that operated from 2011 to 2015. He initially joined the team as a set builder, using his expertise in creative construction to design environments for their Minecraft short films. After demonstrating his talents behind the scenes, he began appearing on camera as his own character, gaining recognition within the Minecraft community.[2][4] His technical proficiency with building mods such as WorldEdit and VoxelSniper during this period laid the groundwork for his future success as a building instructor.[2]

[3][4]

Grian created his YouTube channel on November 22, 2009, though his first public video appeared on January 1, 2015.[1][4] He made the decision to pursue solo content creation in 2014 as CraftedMovie's viewership declined and its members shifted focus to other projects.[4]

Wynncraft and Game Development

In 2013, Grian co-founded Wynncraft, a Minecraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), alongside collaborators Jumla and Salted. The server launched on April 29, 2013, and has since grown to host over 2 million players.[3][4] On July 4, 2017, Guinness World Records recognized Wynncraft as the largest MMORPG built within Minecraft, cementing the project's significance in gaming history.[3][18]

Building Tutorials and Educational Content

Grian's channel gained substantial traction through his building-focused content, particularly his tutorial series aimed at helping players improve their construction skills. His video "5 Easy Steps To Improve Your Minecraft House," uploaded in July 2015, became a breakthrough moment for his channel and remains one of his most recognized works.[2][12] The tutorial format resonated with audiences seeking practical, accessible advice for enhancing their builds.

[6][3]

His video "50 Ways To Mess With Your Friends In Minecraft," published in June 2019, achieved extraordinary popularity, accumulating over 90 million views and becoming one of his most-viewed uploads.[26][27] The content creator has consistently produced building guides covering topics from starter houses to advanced architectural techniques, establishing himself as an authority in Minecraft construction.[12][16]

Evolution SMP

On January 10, 2017, Grian joined the Minecraft Evolution SMP, a unique survival multiplayer series where participants progressed through different versions of Minecraft, starting from Beta 1.2_02. Players traveled through portals placed by mysterious entities called "The Watchers," solving puzzles to advance through Minecraft's historical updates.[4][17] Grian uploaded 51 episodes of his Evolution SMP experience, with his first episode premiering on October 1, 2017.[17][19] He announced his departure from the server on August 17, 2018, stating that while he had enjoyed his time there, he no longer found it as engaging.[4]

Hermitcraft Involvement

Grian joined Hermitcraft, an invitation-only private Minecraft server, at the start of Season 6 in July 2018. His arrival marked a significant shift in the server's dynamics, as he quickly became known for large-scale pranks, ambitious collaborative projects, and community events.[3][4] During Season 6, he produced 110 episodes, an exceptionally high output that he later acknowledged was due to a slower, more methodical approach to content creation.[9]

[12][2][4]

Throughout his Hermitcraft tenure, Grian has co-hosted charity events supporting organizations including the Gamers Outreach Foundation, the Make a Wish Foundation, and SOS Africa.[3] In April 2025, he participated in a live charity stream for Gamers Outreach, appearing alongside fellow Hermitcraft members at Microsoft Studios.[23][24]

[13][14][2]

His Hermitcraft content features elaborate pranks, mega builds, and collaborative storytelling. Notable Season 6 moments included the original Tag game, Demise, and the Hermitcraft Civil War. Season 7 introduced proximity voice chat late in the season and featured memorable events including the Mycelium Resistance war and Grumbot, a robot built with fellow Hermit Mumbo Jumbo.[6] As of October 2025, he remains an active participant in Hermitcraft Season 10.[3]

Life Series Creation

In April 2021, Grian launched the Life Series with "3rd Life," an experimental hardcore Minecraft series featuring 14 content creators. The concept assigns players multiple lives, with their name color indicating their status: green for three lives, yellow for two, and red for their final life. Red-name players become hostile and can attack anyone, while eliminated players are removed from the series.[3][7]

[16][2]

The success of "3rd Life" led to multiple seasons: "Last Life" (2021), which introduced the Boogeyman mechanic and life trading; "Double Life" (2022), where players were soul-bound in pairs and shared health; "Limited Life" (2023), which replaced lives with a 24-hour timer that decreased with each death; and "Secret Life" (2023-2024), which incorporated secret tasks players had to complete.[7][20][21]

[17][18][16]

In October 2024, Grian launched "Wild Life," the sixth season of the Life Series, introducing "wildcards"—different twists affecting gameplay each session. This season featured 18 participants starting with six lives, and Grian designed all the wildcard mechanics himself.[22] The series concluded in December 2024 with its eighth episode finale.[25]

[19][20]

Competitive Gaming

Grian has been a regular participant in MC Championship, a competitive Minecraft tournament featuring popular content creators. He first competed in MCC 6 in June 2020 as part of Cyan Creepers.[5] His most notable achievement came during MC Championship 17 on September 18, 2021, when he and his Orange Ocelots teammates—FalseSymmetry, PeteZahHutt, and SB737—won the event. During the final Dodgebolt round, Grian executed a remarkable 1v3 comeback to secure victory, placing sixth individually in the tournament.[8][10]

[21][22][23]

Corfe Castle Collaboration

In July 2022, Xbox partnered with the National Trust to recreate Corfe Castle in Dorset within Minecraft as part of the game's Wild Update promotion. Grian collaborated with historian Alice Loxton and National Trust archaeologist Martin Papworth to rebuild the 1,000-year-old castle ruins, using historical references and creative interpretation to restore the structure to its former glory.[11][13] The project aimed to engage younger audiences with historical landmarks and culminated during the National Trust's Festival of Archaeology. A Minecraft: Education Edition package of the experience was developed for classroom use.[11][15]

[24][25][26]

Content Style and Approach

Grian's content maintains a kid-friendly, accessible tone while offering substantial educational value. His building tutorials emphasize practical techniques that viewers can immediately apply to their own projects. He focuses on architectural fundamentals such as shape variation, block palette selection, depth creation, and detailing methods.[12][14]

[27][6]

His multiplayer content showcases collaborative creativity and good-natured pranking within community servers. The Life Series demonstrates his ability to design game mechanics that create compelling narratives and dramatic moments while maintaining the entertainment value across multiple participant perspectives.[3] His approach to content creation balances technical skill with personality-driven entertainment, making complex building concepts approachable for audiences of varying skill levels.
